Lesson (57)
1- Intention
That is, intending to purify oneself from hadath or to perform ablution as the Prophet (pbuh) said, “Deeds are by intentions only (that is, deeds are only rewarded according to their intentions).” Ablution is valid only by intention. The aim of making the intention is to distinguish what one does as a kind of worship to get closer to Allah from washing one’s organs just for cooling them. Although one does the same in both cases, prayer is invalid in the second case for absence of the intention.
Talaffuz (Uttering) of the intention:
The intention is made in the heart, so it should not be uttered.

الفريضة الأولى : النية
وهي أن ينوي المتوضيء الطهارة من الحدث أو أن ينوي الوضوء أو ينوي رفع الحدث لقول النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: "إنما الأعمال بالنيات" ولا يعتد بالوضوء إلا بالنية. والغرض من النية تمييز ما يفعله عبادة لله وتقرباً، مما أنه يتبرد بغسل أعضائه ولا يجوز له الصلاة بذلك الغسل مع أن الفعل في الحالتين واحد.
التلفظ بالنية:
ومحل النية القلب، فلا ينبغي التلفظ.
