Lesson (83)
Definition of prayer:
Linguistically, prayer is “doa’a” (supplication/invocation).
Prayer in the Prophetic traditions and Noble Qura’an has several meanings including the following:
• Supplication/invocation and “esteghfar” (asking for the forgiveness of Allah) as in the verse (…. and invoke [Allah’s blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them….) (Attawba, verse 103).
• “Maghfera” (Forgiveness) and “rahma” (mercy) as Allah Almighty says: (Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.) (Al-ahzab, verse 56)
• Places of worship as in the verse (And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned….) (Al-hagg, verse 4)
Jurisprudentially, prayer is an “ebada” (act of worship) including certain sayings and acts starting with “takbeer” and ending with “tasleem”.
