Levels of Purification
The Prophet (pbuh), by saying that “Purification is one half of faith,” could not have meant the outward aspect (physical) only, by immersing your body in water, while abandoning the inward (spiritual) and keeping it full of evil things.
Purification has four levels: (1) cleansing the outer parts of your body from hadath and other types of nagasat (impurities), (2) protecting organs from committing sins, (3) purifying your heart from evils and detestable vices, and (4) taking out of your heart anything other than Allah, which is called the purity of prophets (blessings of Allah be upon them) and the men of truth.

Here, we are interested in the first level of purification, that is, purity from hadath and other types of impurities.

مراتب الطهارة
هيهات هيهات أن يكون المراد بقوله صلى الله عليه وسلم "الطهور نصف الإيمان" عمارة الظاهر بالتنظيف بإفاضة الماء وإلقائه وتخريب الباطن وإبقائه مشحونا بالأخباث والأقذار. والطهارة لها أربع مراتب: المرتبة الأولى تطهير الظاهر عن الأحداث وأنواع النجاسات الأخرى، المرتبة الثانية تطهير الجوارح عن الجرائم والآثام، المرتبة الثالثة تطهير القلب عن الأخلاق المذمومة والرذائل الممقوتة المرتبة الرابعة تطهير السر عما سوى الله تعالى وهي طهارة الأنبياء صلوات الله عليهم والصديقين.
