Literally, “ wudu’ ” is derived from the word “ wadaa’ ” in Arabic which means “beauty.” If you describe a man by this word, you mean that he is good looking.
It is also derived from the word “ dua’ ” which means “light.” This is evident in the prophetic tradition, “Wudu’ upon wudu’ is light upon light.”
In jurisprudence, it is purification by water for certain parts of the body which are washed such as the face and hands or wiped which is the head.

الوضوء لغة جاء من كلمة وضاءة بمعنى الحسن والجمال. يقال رجل وضئ أى ذو هيئة حسنة.
والوضوء جاءت من الضوء .وفى لغتنا العامية الضوء مثل النور .ويقال رجل منور أى وجه منور والوضوء على الوضوء نور على نور.
فى الفقه هو طهارة مائية تتعلق بأعضاء مخصوصة بعضها يغسل كالوجه واليدين وبعضها يمسح كالرأس.
